Beware, Don’t Compare

Hi There!

Have you ever let comparison hold you back from realizing your dreams? I sure have and it’s still something I have to constantly keep in check. Today I want to share some valuable tools I use to dissolve comparison before it gets the best of me.

Last week I had the opportunity to speak at an event in Philadelphia to over 500 people! The person who spoke before me was a seasoned vet. He was bouncing all over the stage and incorporated tons of crowd involvement. I started to feel comparison creeping into my mind, as I knew I’d be on stage with my notes. I started comparing my presentation, content, and experience to his, which only led me down a rabbit trail of discouragement, to the point where I questioned whether my speech even mattered or made a difference. I knew it was almost go time. I needed to shift my mindset out of comparison and into the present moment so I could authentically share my message.

Here’s what I did…

  • I reflected on how grateful I am for all of the many meaningful conversations and connections I’ve been able to make over the years from vulnerably sharing my message. It truly blesses me every time someone tells me my message and/or Andrew’s books made an impact on their life.
  • I reflected on why I was speaking in the first place. I felt it was my calling to give Andrew’s message and to share his writings. I’ve always believed Andrew had important messages to share that would add value to the lives of others. It’s been the honor of my life to share those messages with the world.
  • I reflected on how God uniquely gifted me. Over the years, I’ve come to realize I’ve always been a storyteller— from the storylines I created while playing Barbie® as a kid or my life stories I wrote in journals growing up, to my family’s journey and the message I’m currently sharing around the country. I’m a storyteller.

Reflecting on gratitude, our big why, and our unique gifts can shift us away from the comparison thoughts and back into the present moment. That way we can keep doing what we were each called to do while inspiring others to do the same.

After my reflections, I was ready to take the stage feeling fully present and excited to share! I had many meaningful and important conversations after my speech, which reminded me I was exactly where I was supposed to be. The next time a similar situation arises, I will move more quickly into a state of non-comparison, and focus on celebrating our individual gifts.

I’d love to hear your thoughts…

What are areas in your life that trigger comparison? What are some things you do or tell yourself to stop comparison from bringing you down?

Looking forward to reading your comments.

Recently, I took a leap of faith and applied to be a TEDx speaker at a local event in early April. The principal of the high school who is hosting the event heard me speak and recommended me. As nervous as I am, I’m equally excited because I thrive on a good challenge and this feels like the right next challenge. I’ll let ya know what happens. I’d love to know if there are any new challenges you are taking on this year? Please share so I can celebrate with you!

Thank you for making my blog part of your day! Hope you are feeling blessed and encouraged. Love and Blessings.

PS – I’m on Day 3 of Whole30® and I’m struggling. Any Whole30® encouragement or tips are much appreciated.

Loved this post !!! Comparison continually silences us when God is calling us to speak up … so glad you went out on that stage and shared this story with us. What a great reminder God hadn’t called us to be anyone else .

Did whole 30 last year …. hardest month ever but so very helpful !!! It really resolved some health issues I had going on and gave me clarity of thought and restful nights that I had been longing for . Keep it up girl !!!! It’s hard, but so worth it !!!
