Our Story

I’m not going to lie, the past two days I’ve felt emotionally wiped out.  All I’ve wanted to do is sleep.  My energy feels low and my spirits have been a little down.  I thought it might be therapeutic to share mine and Andrew’s love story with those of you who don’t know it.  This post is probably more for me then it is for you, but hopefully you will find it entertaining.

I met Andrew in the fall of my junior year at Baylor.  He was a seminary student at Truett, in his third year.  One of the girls I cheered with at Baylor started coming up to me at practice and telling me about this boy she thought would be perfect for me.  She heard Andrew speak at a Baylor football Bible Study and decided that Andrew and I were meant to be.  The first couple of times she talked to me about Andrew I politely let her know I wasn’t interested in the dating scene at the time.  The third and fourth time she mentioned him I thought this guy must be pretty amazing for her to be so insistent on me meeting him.  The only thing she said that worried me was that Andrew might want to move to Afghanistan at some point.  That right there was a no go, but he still seemed interesting so I thought I’d at least meet him.  My sorority had a fun event in Salado, TX that I looked forward to every year, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to meet this Mr. Wonderful.

I wanted to meet Andrew first before I decided to take him to Salado.  We met for the first time on a double date.  I’m not going to say the date went smoothly.  To be honest the date was pretty awkward.  I could tell immediately that he was closed off.  It happen to be his birthday that night and I found out as we were leaving dinner.  However, what left an impression on me was all that he had accomplished at such a young age.  He intrigued me.

The next time we went out was for my sorority event, which was on my birthday.  He happens to be an amazing country western dancer (which he believes is what hooked me).  We danced, walked around the town and had a lot of fun.  Conversation flowed and being with him felt natural.  As we were driving home, he told me his story about surviving cancer at 18.  He told me how he wanted to make a difference in the lives of others.  He also shared with me that he had recently written a book.  Needless to say I was blown away by this guy.  I remember thinking that Andrew had so much to teach me.  In that moment I was hoping this relationship would grow.

The next date we went to coffee. I interviewed him (no literally, I had written out questions). So lame I now realize J By the end of the date I asked him if going to seminary was like being a Pharisee, not a compliment. I can’t believe he asked me out again.  Soon after this date, it was Christmas break.  Before we left, he gave me his unpublished manuscript of the book he had just finished writing.  I devoured his book in a couple of days.  It was fascinating reading someone’s life story that you’d only met a couple of months before.  His book is called “Your Best Life Later” ( I believe you can get the book on Amazon).  I was drawn in by his story.  After reading the book, I felt like I had known Andrew all my life.  He inspired me and challenged me and made me want to be a better person.  I had always wanted to be an inspiration to others so to find someone who ignited a fire inside me felt unbelievable .  On Christmas day Andrew sent me 3 dozen red roses and asked me to be exclusive.  I’m pretty sure I said something like, “Yes but let’s not put it on facebook yet (what a diva).  I don’t think I realized he was that into me so it came as a shock that he would want to make it official so soon.

I remember asking Andrew about 4 months into dating him where he saw our relationship headed.  He let me know that he planned on marrying me.  I recall feeling both terrified and excited at the same time.  He was everything and more than I could ask for in a husband.  The funny thing was that what I loved about him the most was that he didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear; he told me what I needed to hear (which sometimes really made me mad).  He challenged my thinking.  He taught me to think outside the box and to formulate my own educated opinions.  He inspired me to be more, accomplish more, and give more.  For all of these reasons and many more I said yes to Andrew.  Next post will have to be the engagement story because it was pretty hilarious. Love you all more then you know!

Keep those memories, because they will be important for you and Ellie to have. She will want to know how special he was and how devoted you both are to her and each other. Maybe she will be lucky enough to make her own memories with Andrew, but if she isn’t those stories will have even more meaning for her. I love that you can share with all of us as well!

May the Lord give you the strength to add to the special memories even now. Each day is a gift. I will pray for your strength to open them and see what the Lord has given you.
